IMPORTANT CURRENT AFFAIRS OF JUNE 8, 2016
1) The OBC quota benefit
for the post of Professor and Associate Professor
has been scrapped by the University Grants Commission (UGC), as announced on 7
June 2016
i).
The Other Backward Caste (OBC) quota benefit for the Professor and Associate
Professor posts has been scrapped by the University Grants Commission (UGC).
According to the new rule formed by the commission, as announced on 7 June
2016, 27% OBC reservation in teaching positions will be applicable for the
level of Assistant Professor only.
ii).
The commission has issued notices to all the central universities to implement
the new policies.
iii).As of now in the teaching position, the reservation for SC is
15% and ST is 7.5%. However, the assistant professors belong to OBC
category can only avail the benefit of 27% reservation.
2) Himachal Pradesh became the first in the
country to have a State Data Centre (SDC), designed using green data centre
concept.
i). Himachal Pradesh inaugurated a new State Data Centre (SDC)
at Shimla on 5 June 2016 that has been designed using green data centre
concept. The state thus became the first in the country to establish such data
centre.
ii). This SDC had been established a cost of Rs. 58-crore. It would
integrate the websites of various departments and all services could be
accessible through the integrated data base, saving time and money spent on
creation of infrastructure.
iii). It is being seen as an important initiative in green
technologies as all state government services would be provided online and
online and paperless governance will become a reality.
3) Axis Bank launched India’s first
certified green bond at the London Stock Exchange (LSE) to raise $500 million
on 6 June 2016.
i). Axis Bank on 6 June 2016 raised $500 million at the London
Stock Exchange (LSE) after it launched India’s first internationally-listed
certified green bond to finance climate change solutions around the world.
ii). The green bond has been certified by the Climate Bonds Standards
Board (CBSB).
iii).The proceeds of the bond will be invested in green energy,
transportation and infrastructure projects, reinforcing India’s commitment to
produce 175,000 MW of renewable power by 2022.
4) Umang Bedi was chosen as the new
Managing Director of Facebook India on 6 June 2016 to take over from Kirthiga
Reddy.
i).
Facebook Inc. has roped in former Adobe executive Umang Bedi as Managing
Director of its India operations. He will take over from Kirthiga Reddy, who
will be moving to the US to take on a new role at the company’s headquarters at
Menlo Park.
ii). Umang will be joining Facebook after serving as Managing
Director of the South Asia region at Adobe. He is currently serving his notice
period at Adobe and will officially start at Facebook in July 2016.
iii). At Facebook he will manage the company’s strategic relationships
with top clients and regional agencies in the country.
5) Deshauna Barber was
crowned Miss USA 2016 in the annual pageant held in Las Vegas on 5 June 2016.
i). She is the first Army Reserve officer to get this
crown
ii). She mounted a strong defense of women in combat roles in the
military in the interview section of the pageant held in Las Vegas on 5 June
2016.
iii). The daughter
of a retired Army master sergeant, Barber was commissioned as a quartermaster
officer in 2011 and serves as a logistics commander for the 988th Quartermaster Detachment
Unit at Fort Meade, Maryland.
iv). She will now go on to
represent the United States in the Miss Universe pageant.
