IMPORTANT CURRENT AFFAIRS OF SEPTEMBER 17th, 2017
1. Nepal On 17th
September began its first-ever survey to remeasure Mount Everest to
check if the world's tallest peak's height was altered by the 7.8-magnitude
earthquake that struck the country in 2015.
a. Important
Note : The official height of Mount Everest, which lies in the
Mahalangur Himal sub-range of the Himalayas, is 8,848 metres (29,029
feet), first recorded by an Indian survey in 1954.
2. The International
Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), has taken Snow Leopardoff
the "endangered" list, where it was included in 1972.
a. In the new
assessment, IUCN has placed the animal under the less-threatened
"vulnerable" category.
b. Note : To be
considered endangered, species need to have global populations of fewer than
2,500 adults with a decline rate of 20% over 16 years.
3. To celebrate
the 67th birthday of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Bharatiya
Janata Party is observing 'Seva Diwas (Day of Service)' On 17th
September across the country.
a. All the party
leaders attending medical camps, blood donation events, and taking part in
cleanliness drives.
4 Prime
Minister Narendra Modi On 17th September inaugurated Sardar Sarovar
Dam at Gujarat's Kevadia.
a. Important
Note : This day is India's biggest and the world's
second-biggest dam.
b. The
foundation stone for the project was laid by then Prime Minister Jawaharlal
Nehru in 1961, and the project has been completed after 56 years.
5. According to
a recently released circular by Indian Railways, passengers in reserved coaches
of trains will now only be allowed to sleep between 10 pm and 6 am.
a. The provision
comes in place to allow others to sit on seats for the remaining time, after
officials reported issues between passengers over sleeping arrangements.
6. Over 3,500
people, including 1,000 Coast Guard personnel, on Saturday took part in an
annual cleaning drive at three Mumbai beaches to mark the International
Coastal Cleanup Day.
7. Indian Air
Force Marshal Arjan Singh (98) passed away.
a. Note : He was the first
and only five-star ranked IAF officer in India.
b. Mr Singh was
honored with the Padma Vibhushan award in 1965 for his
contributions in the 1965 war against Pakistan.

Alwar, Mahant Chandnath (61) passed away
9. DIG Roopa
Moudgil, who had exposed VIP treatment given to former AIADMK Secretary
Sasikala in Bengaluru central prison, was awarded the President's

10. Indian Ace shuttler PV Sindhu became the first
Indian to lift the Korea Open Superseries title.
a. In finals she
defeated World Championships gold winner, Japan's Nozomi Okuhara.
11. Former India captain MS Dhoni completed 100
fifties in international cricket, reaching the milestone in the first
ODI against Australia at Chennai On 17th September.
a. Dhoni is the
14th batsman to accomplish the feat, with Sachin Tendulkar leading the list
with 164 fifties in international cricket.
12. Windies' cricketer Chris Gayle became the first
batsman to hit 100 sixes in T20I cricket.
13. South African all-rounder JP Duminy announced
his retirement from Tests and first-class cricket with immediate effect.
