The International Day of Charity is
being observed (5th September).
a. Aim of
International Day of Charity : To recognise the role
of charity in alleviating human suffering within and among nations, as well as to recognise
the efforts of charitable organisations and individuals such as Mother Teresa.
2.
India, Kazakhstan joint army exercise KAZIND will
be conducted between Indian and Kazakhstan Army in Otar region, Kazakhstan from
10th to 23rd September 2018.
a. This
will be third joint military exercise between two countries which have history
of extensive cooperation in defence arena.
b. Note : The
second edition of the exercise was held in India in 2017.
c. Aim of KAZIND : To
build and promote bilateral army to army relations and exchange skills and
experiences between armies of both countries.

Thailand's Royal Police Cadet
Academy has announced it will not admit female candidates from
the next academic year.
a. The academy,
which began admitting female students in 2009, has produced about 700
policewomen.
4.
US Secretary of
State Mike Pompeo is on a
visit to Pakistan.
a. During
this visit, he will meet Pakistan's Prime Minister Imran Khan.
b. This
visit comes amid tense ties between the two countries and US military aid cuts
over Pakistan's failure to crack down on militants.
5.
Qatar today amended its
residency laws to allow foreign workers to leave the country without
exit permits from their employers.
a. Earlier,
foreign workers required permission from their employers before leaving the
country.
6.
Ukraine has
launched annual joint military exercise titled Rapid Trident with
United States and other NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) member
countries.
a. The
exercise is being taken place in western Ukrainian village of Starychi from
September 2 to 15, 2018.
b. Aim of
Rapid Trident 2018 : To practice countering armed aggression in
conditions of the hybrid war.
7.
India along with 23 other
nations will be participating in major Indian ocean-wide tsunami mock exercise
known as IOWave18.
a. The
exercise is being organized by Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC)
of UNESCO.
b. It will
involve evacuation of thousands of people from coastal areas in over half a
dozen states.
c. Aim of
IOWae18 : To increase tsunami preparedness, evaluate response
capabilities in each state and improve coordination throughout the
region.

Teachers Day is
being observed across the country today (5th September).
a. Important
Points to Note :
i) 5th
September is celebrated as Teachers Day as a mark of respect to teachers and
their contributions to the society.
ii) This
day commemorates birth anniversary of former President Dr.Sarvepalli
Radhakrishnan, a philosopher and a teacher par excellence, and his
contribution towards Indian education system.
iii)He was
honored with Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award in India, in 1954.
iv) This is
his 128th Birth Day.
v) Since
1962, his birthday is celebrated in India as Teachers' Day.

To mark fight against malnutrition, the National
Nutrition Month (Rashtriya Poshan Maah) is being observed across
India in September 2018.
a. Union
Ministry of Women and Child Development are spearheading various programmes
during this month to spread broad awareness on issues related to malnutrition
like stunting, under-nutrition, anaemia and low birth weight in children.
b. Note : The
decision to celebrate September as National Nutrition Month was
taken in the 2nd meeting of National Council on India's Nutrition Challenges
under POSHAN Abhiyaan, which was held at New Delhi on 25th July 2018.

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs has cleared
proposal of Jharkhand Government to rename Nagar
Untari town and railway station as Banshidhar Nagar,
after Banshidhar Temple, which is dedicated to Krishna in Garhwa district of
state.

India is going to
purchase 18 bullet trains from Japan at
a cost of ₹7,000 crore in
a deal where the seller will also have to transfer technology for local
production.
a. Each
train will have 10 coaches and have cruising speeds of 350 kmph.

The International Women Entrepreneurs
Summit 2018 was concluded today at Kathmandu (Nepal's capital).
a. This
summit was organised by the South Asian Women Development Forum
b. The
summit was inaugurated by Vice President of Nepal Nanda Bahadur Pun.
c. Theme
of International Women Entrepreneurs Summit 2018 : “Equality
begins with Economic Empowerment”.

The Asia Index Pvt Ltd has launched S&P
BSE Private Banks Index to measure the performance of private
banks.
a. This
index is designed to provide market participants with transparent and
rules-based benchmark that measures performance of private banks listed in
India.
b. Asia
Index Pvt Ltd is a joint venture between S&P Dow Jones Indices and BSE Ltd.
14.
Japan is going to launch
two Cube satellites next week to test the concept of space
elevator in Earth's orbit.
a. The
test involves a 6-centimetre-long box which would move along a 10-metre-long
cable suspended in space between the two satellites that will keep it taut.
15.
The Internet Society (ISOC) has
signed an MOU with Internet Service Providers Association of India
(ISPAI) to undertake activities to promote security of network
infrastructure in India to make the web safe for business and consuers
alike.
a. The
agreement will see the two partners undertake initiatives and activities in
India to promote 'Mutually Agreed Norms for Routing Security (MANRS)' --
a programme whose objective is to improve the resilience and security of the
routing infrastructure.

Sara Iftekhar, a
Pakistani-origin student from northern England became the 1st
hijab-wearing finalist of the Miss England beauty
pageant today.
17.
Indian Pacer RP Singh announced
his retirement from cricket today, exactly 13 years after making his
international debut.
a. He was
a part of India's 2007 World T20-winning team, and played 82 international
matches between 2005 and 2011.
18.
Lucknow (Uttar
Pradesh's capital) is going to host its 1st International match in
24 years after the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in
India) announced that the Indian cricket team will face the Windies in a T20I
match on November 6.
a. Note : The
Windies' tour of India, which consists of two Tests, five ODIs, and three T20Is
begins on October 4.
