the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi.
a. In January
2004, Iranian Nobel laureate Shirin Ebadi had taken a proposal
for an International Day of Non-Violence.
b. On 15
June 2007 the United Nations General Assembly voted
to establish2nd October as the International Day of Non-Violence.

The Nation pays homage to the Father of the Nation
Mahatma Gandhi on his 149th Birth anniversary today.

Nation pays homage to former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur
Shastri on his 114th Birth anniversary today.
a. Shastri
served as prime minister from June 9, 1964, until his sudden death in Tashkent,
Uzbekistan on January 11, 1966.
b. He
successfully led the nation during the 22-day war with Pakistan in 1965.
c. He gave the
slogan of 'Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan', which led to a rare display of
unity in the country during India-Pakistan war.

The 2018 Nobel Prize in Physics has
been awarded for inventions in laser physics with one
half to Arthur Ashkin and the other half to Gérard
Mourou and Donna Strickland.
a. Ashkin was
awarded "for the optical tweezers and their application to biological
systems".
b. Mourou and
Strickland were awarded "for their method of generating high-intensity,
ultra-short optical pulses".

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) today announced
that it would inject ₹36,000 crore liquidity into
the system through purchase of government bonds in October amid fears of a
potential credit crunch.
a. The central
bank's move comes after the government recently announced that it will
cut gross borrowings by ₹70,000 crore in the second
half of the current fiscal.

India's largest lender State Bank of India (SBI) has reduced
the cash withdrawal limits on its Classic and Maestro debit cards from ₹40,000 to ₹20,000 per day with
effect from October 31.

been appointed as the Chief Economist of the International
Monetary Fund (IMF).

Commission (CIC) today brought Indian cricket governing body BCCI (Board
of Control for Cricket in India) under
the RTI (Right to Information) Act.

commission also directed BCCI to put online and offline mechanisms in place
within 15 days to receive RTI queries.
