Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be on a
2-day visit to Japan starting October 28.
a. During this
visit, he will take part in an annual summit between the two nations.
b. This will be
the 13th annual summit and the fifth one to be attended by Prime Minister
Narendra Modi.
c. Modi will
also hold bilateral talks with his Japanese counterpart Shinzo
Abe.
d. Both leaders
are likely to discuss issues of defence and regional security.

Members of the European Parliament have voted
in favour of a proposal to ban single-use plastics in a
bid to curb marine pollution.
a. The proposal
called for a complete ban on plastic cutlery, cotton buds, drink stirrers and a
reduction in the use of food and drink containers like plastic cups.
b. The ban is
likely to take effect by 2021.

The International Conference on Status and Protection of
Coral Reefs (STAPCOR – 2018) was conculed today at Bangaram Island,
Union Territory of Lakshadweep.
a. This
conference was inaugurated by the Union Minister of Environment, Forest and
Climate Change Dr. Harsh Vardhan.

The Supreme Court has banned the sale and
registration of Bharat Stage IV vehicles from 1st April
2020.
a. The apex
court added that only vehicles compliant with the Bharat Stage VI emission
standards can be sold from then.
b. Note : The Bharat
Stage emission standards are instituted by the government to regulate the
output of air pollutants from motor vehicles.

To enable IT professionals and organisations to bring together
their efforts towards social causes and service to society on one platform,
Prime Minister Narendra Modi today launched a 'Main Nahin Hum'
portal and app.
a. The portal,
based on the theme 'Self4Society', is expected to generate wider
participation of interested people motivated to work for the benefit of
society.

India has signed a $777-million deal (₹5,683 crore) with Israel
Aerospace Industries (IAI) to obtain Barak 8 long-range
Surface-to-air Defence Missiles and Missile Defence Systems for seven
Indian Navy ships.
a. State-owned
Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) will be IAI's Indian manufacturing
partner.

A Chinese company today tested the 'world's largest'
cargo drone Feihong-98 (FH-98) which is said to carry
a payload of 1.5 tonnes (1,500kg).
a. The FH-98 has
a maximum takeoff weight of 5.25 tonnes (5,250 kg) and maximum range of 1,200
km.
b. Further, it
is capable of reaching a flying altitude of 4.5 km and a cruising speed of 180
kmph.

Russia has successfully sent an unmanned Soyuz rocket into
space weeks after a failed launch endangered the lives of two astronauts.
a. The mission
deployed a satellite into the low Earth orbit, ranging between approximately
240 km and 900 km.

The government today appointed new Chief
justices for 5 High Courts. They are :
i) Bombay High
Court - NH Patil
ii) Calcutta High
Court - DK Gupta
iii) Uttarakhand
High Court - Ramesh Ranganathan
iv) Gauhati High
Court - A S Bopanna
v) Sikkim High
Court - Vijai Kumar Bist
b) Important
Note : After these new appointments, all 24 high courts in the
country have full-time chief justices.
10.IT services giant Wipro has
appointed former SBI Chairperson Arundhati Bhattacharya as
an Independent Director for a period of five years.
a. 2 days ago,
Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries appointed her as
an independent director.
b. Bhattacharya
is also working in private equity firm ChrysCapital as an adviser.
11.One97 Communications'
subsidiary Paytm Payments Bank today appointed Satish Kumar Gupta as
the MD & CEO of the bank.
a. Gupta's
appointment comes months after Renu Satti stepped down as the CEO of the Bank
to head the company's retail segment.
b. Previously,
Gupta worked at National Payments Corporation of India and State Bank of India.
12.All-rounder Dwayne
Bravo (35), who won World T20 in 2012 and 2016 with Windies, has
announced his retirement from international cricket.
a. He made his
international debut in an ODI against England in 2004.
