- On
June 12, 2016 World Day Against Child Labour was observed.
- This
day was launched by the International Labour Organization (ILO) in 2002.
- The
main aim of this day is to raise awareness and activism to prevent child
labour.
- Theme
of the year 2016 : End child labour in supply
chains - It's everyone's business.
- 50
people were shot dead by a gunman and 53 others were injured in a crowded
homosexual club in Orlando,
United States On June 12, 2016.
- This
attack is the deadliest
mass shooting incident in US history.
- The
2007 Virginia Tech massacre in which 32 people were killed had been the worst
US mass shooting until now.
- President
Pranab Mukherjee On
June 12, 2016 embarked on a Six-day visit to Three African nations (Ghana, Ivory Coast and Namibia).
- The
main aim of this visit is to boost trade ties with these countries known for
having "solid political system, where democracy has taken roots".
- Important
Point Note :
This is the maiden visit of any Indian President to Ghana and Ivory Coast
whereas to Namibia, such a visit comes after two decades.
- The
Gujarat Government On June 12, 2016 announced the theme for Gujarat Global Investors' Summit
2017 which is going to be
held on January next year.
- The
theme will be : 'Gujarat Connecting India to the World'.
- According
to the National Family Health
Survey (2015-16), Assam
recorded the highest maternal mortality rate in
the country for the tenth successive year.
- While
Assam registered 300 maternal deaths per one lakh live births, the national
average was 167.
- The
survey also found 46% of Assam's women in the 15-49 age group to be anaemic.
- Sikkim's
Lok Sabha MP PD Rai On June 12, 2016 launched the state's open government data portal to make it first in India to have such
a portal.
- On
the open data portal, the data produced or commissioned by the government or
government controlled entities can be freely used, reused and redistributed by
anyone.
- The Meghalaya Government has made it mandatory
for marriages solemnized after October 5, 2015 to be registered.
- Notified
under the Meghalaya
Compulsory Registration of Marriages Rules (2015), the order states that marriages must
be registered within 60 days from the date of solemnization.
- Shiyal
Bet, an island in Gujarat's
Amreli District On June 12,
2016 got electricity supply for the first time, nearly seven decades
after independence.
- With
electricity reaching the island through a 6-km undersea cable, every part of
Gujarat is reportedly now connected to electricity.
- The
6,000-strong population on Shiyal Bet had been dependent on kerosene oil lamps
or battery-run lights till now.
- The Assam government has passed a bill which
proposes the creation of a single window clearance system for investors to obtain all the clearance and no
objection certificates online.
- Meanwhile,
unused government lands will be pooled within 100 days to create a land bank
for considering investment proposals from potential investors.
- Andhra
Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu On June 12, 2016 launched an IT-enabled management system for
irrigation projects in the
state.
- The
system will enable regular assessment of the progress of the ongoing projects
in the state and help in monitoring water storage levels and flow of various
rivers and reservoirs.
- The West Bengal government has now decided to give rice at Rs two per kg to Sex
workers and poor HIV patients in the state.
- Telangana emerged as the state
with the highest percentage of
non-vegetarians, with about 99%, according to a Registrar General of India
survey in 2014.
- In
Telangana, 98.8% men and 98.6% women were non-vegetarians.
- West
Bengal was second, with 98.7% men and 98.4% women non-vegetarians.
- Andhra
Pradesh and Tamil Nadu rounded off the third and fourth spots on the 21-state
list.
- United
Launch Alliance's 'Delta IV
Heavy', the world's
largest rocket, was successfully launched On June 12, 2016 carrying a
classified payload for the US intelligence agency National Reconnaissance
Office.
- The
mission, NROL-37, was the ninth to be launched atop a Delta IV Heavy since its
debut in 2004.
- The Mines Ministry is developing Mining Surveillance System, apan-India surveillance network using satellite technology to curb
illegal mining.
- This
technology will track mine lease areas and detect changes in topography.
- The
government On June 12, 2016 asked the Public
Sector Banks (PSBs) to expand
the user base under the Atal
Pension Yojana.
- This
comes after several PSBs failed to meet their enrollment targets under the
scheme last fiscal.
- Note : SBI managed to
enroll 3.3 lakh people against a target of 50 lakh, Punjab National Bank
managed 1.85 lakh against the target 19 lakh.
- British
rock singer Rod Stewart,
known for songs like 'Have I Told You Lately', has received a Knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II as mentioned in the Queen's annual
'Birthday Honors List'.
- Note : 'Downton Abbey'
actress Penelope Wilton, who has been made a dame, is among the other
honourees.
- The
awardees of the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award instituted in
1954, need not be Indian.
- Till
now, it has been awarded to one naturalised citizen, Mother Teresa (in 1980),
and to two non-Indians, Pakistan national Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan (in 1987) and
former South African President Nelson Mandela (in 1990).
- Actress Priyanka Chopra has been nominated for her role in the
American television series 'Quantico' at the 2016
Teen Choice Awards.
- Indian
short film "Leeches", starring Sayani Gupta, won the Audience
Choice Award at the Seoul International Women's Film
Festival (SIWFF).
- "Leeches"
is a film about two Hyderabadi sisters who live in the interiors of the city
where a lot of orthodox practices are still prevalent.
- Jaipur's Aman Bansal has topped the Joint Entrance Examination
(JEE) Advanced 2016, the results of which were announced On June 12, 2016.
- Riya
Singh from
Kota, with an All India Rank of 133, has topped the Joint Entrance
Examination (JEE) Advanced 2016 among girls.
- Legendary
Canadian ice hockey player Gordie
Howe (88) passed away.
- He
was nicknamed Mr Hockey and had spent most of his career with the Detroit Red
Wings, winning the Stanley Cup four times.
- Congress
leader and former Chief Minister V.
Vaithilingam was elected
unopposed as the Speaker of the 14th Puducherry legislative Assembly.
- Pro-tem
Speaker VP Shivakozhuthu was declared elected unopposed as the
Deputy Speaker.
- Additional
Solicitor General of India and former Parliamentarian Satya Pal Jain was appointed as a part-time member of the 21st Law Commission of India.
- Note : His appointment is
in addition to present charge as an Additional Solicitor General of India.
- President
Pranab Mukherjee On June 12, 2016 nominated Sambhaji
Raje, a direct descendant of the Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji, to
the Rajya Sabha.
- Raje
is a social activist and has been a supporter for reservation of the Marathas
under the Other Backward Classes category in Maharashtra.
- He
becomes one of the 12 nominated members in the Upper House of the Parliament.
- Congress leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad and Kamal Nath were On June 12, 2016 made party General Secretaries by Congress President Sonia
Gandhi.
- While
Azad, the Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, has been made the in-charge
of Uttar Pradesh, Kamal Nath will look after Punjab and Haryana.
- Azad
and Kamal Nath replace Madhusudan Mistry and Shakeel Ahmed as the General
Secretaries.
- 3M
India, the Indian arm of US multinational conglomerate 3M Co.,
announced the appointment of Debarati
Sen as Managing Director (MD) of 3M India Limited and 3M Lanka Pvt.
Ltd. with effect from June 1, 2016.
- Debarati
Sen is going to replace Amit Laroya, who led the company for the past three
years and is now moving to 3M Korea.
- Indian
Badminton player Saina Nehwal defeated Chinese shuttler Sun Yu
to win the Australian Open
Super Series in Sydney On
June 12, 2016.
- This
is Saina’s first title this year, with her last win being the India Super
Series in March 2015.
- Note : Saina has won the
Australian Open for the second time, she already won the title in the year
2014.
- India's Leander Paes will become the only tennis player in the
world and the first Indian to
make a 7th appearance at the
Olympics.
- Note : Paes won the bronze
medal for India in singles tennis at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
