- On Oct 14, 2016 World Standards Day / International standards
day was observed.
- This day was initially launched in 1970, and is now recognized
and celebrated by nations around the globe.
- This day honors the efforts of the thousands of experts who
develop voluntary standards within standards development organizations such as
the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), International Organization for Standardization (ISO), International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the Internet Engineering Task
Force (IETF).
- The aim of World Standards Day is to raise awareness among
regulators, industry and consumers as to the importance of standardization to
the global economy.

- World Standards Day 2016 Theme : “Standards Build Trust”
- The US Embassy has asked the Union Ministry of Home Affairs to nominate two
officers for training in what it calls one of the best courses in the world for investigating
terrorist attacks.
- The officers will be trained to deal with situations like lone
wolf attack or suicide bombing and effectively investigate explosions and
terror attack scenes.
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi On Oct 14, 2016 announced that over
the next few days, India will host world leaders for the 8th BRICS and 1st ever BRICS-BIMSTEC
Outreach Summit.
- India has been ranked low 97th among the 118 countries surveyed in 2016 Global Hunger Index
(GHI).
- The index was released by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI).
- Arunachal Pradesh became the 14th state where BJP is in power afterTamiyo Taga was sworn in as State Cabinet Minister in the Pema Khandu-led
government.
- BJP is in a coalition government with regional parties in seven
states while it is in power alone in seven states which include Gujarat,
Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Assam, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, and Haryana.
- The cabinet committee on parliamentary affairs On Oct 14, 2016
announced that theParliament's month-long winter session will be held from November 16 to December 16, 2016.
- Note : The winter session usually starts from the third or fourth
week of November but was advanced to facilitate the government to roll out the
goods and services tax from April 1 next year.
- India has decided to eliminate use of HFC-23, a
Green House Gas (GHG) that harms the ozone layer by 2030.
- IAS officer Ajay Kumar Bhalla was On Oct 14, 2016 appointed as the Director Generalof Foreign Trade (DGFT).
- He is going to replace Anup Wadhawan, who has now been appointed
as the Additional Secretary in the Commerce Ministry.
- India and Russia have signed an agreement for cooperation in the development of a network of 25 integrated
infrastructure Agro irradiation centres.
- American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan is the first American to win the Nobel Prize in Literature since author Toni
Morrison in 1993.
- He is also the second songwriter to have ever won the prize, after Indian songwriter Rabindranath Tagore.
- Note : The 75-year-old was declared the winner for creating "new
poetic expressions" within the American song tradition.
- India’s banking system has reported total deposits worth ₹100 lakh crore for the first time ever in September, according
to data released by the RBI.
- Further, September saw the highest-ever monthly rise in deposits of ₹5.32 lakh crore.
- India has the fourth largest population of High Net Worth Individuals (HNWI) in the Asia-Pacific
region, with the number of such individuals reaching 2 lakh in 2015, according
to Asia-Pacific Wealth Report 2016 by Capgemini.
- The world's largest oil producer Saudi Aramco has said that it will be ready to launch its Initial Public Offering
(IPO) in 2018, which could value the firm at around $2 trillion.
- This would make it the world's biggest IPO in history.
- Note : Aramco has increased its oil production to record levels in
recent months.
