- On Oct
16, 2016 World Food Day was
observed.
- This
day is celebrated every year around the world on 16th October in honor of the
date of the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United
Nations in 1945.

10-day National Cultural Festival of India, Rashtriya Sanskriti
Mahotsav, was inaugurated On Oct 16, 2016 at the Indira Gandhi National
Centre for the Arts, Janpath, New Delhi
- The
second edition of the festival will feature over 150 cultural performances by
400 artists from different parts of the country.
- The International
Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) would be declaring the Kashmiri
Red Stag or Hangul as a 'critically endangered
species'.
- Hangul
has been hunted over centuries and its habitat destroyed, leading to its wild
population shrinking to 150.
- A
Centre-appointed expert panel has concluded that the Saraswati river existed
and it originated in the Himalayas and met the gulf at the western sea.
- Saraswati
was approximately 4,000-km long and passed through Pakistan before meeting
western sea through the Rann of Kutch.
- This
panel was headed by : Prof KS Valdiya.
- Karnataka CM
Siddaramaiah On Oct 16, 2016 announced that the state government is planning an increase
in the reservation quota in education and employment beyond 50% for
the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.
- With
the SC/ST population accounting for 24.1% of the state's population, the
government is also allocating ₹19,542 crore of the ₹85,000-crore budget for the
development of these communities.
- Union
Government has launched Mining Surveillance System (MSS), a
pan-India surveillance network to check illegal mining using latest satellite
technology.
- MSS is
a satellite-based monitoring system which aims to check illegal mining activity
through automatic remote-sensing detection technology in order to establish a
regime of responsive mineral administration.
- India and Russia have
announced defence deals worth about ₹60,000 crores.
- The
deals include the purchase of Russian air defence systems, collaboration in
making stealth warships and setting up a production facility for Kamov
helicopters.
- Note : The
most critical deal is the purchase of five S-400 air defence systems which will
be deployed along the Chinese and Pakistani border.
- Lake
Superior, which is shared by Canada and the United States, is recognised
as the largest freshwater lake, according to the Guinness World
Records.
- The
lake, which covers a surface area of around 82,100 square kilometres, is also
considered to be the world's third-largest freshwater lake by volume.
- Chandigarh
International airport has been declared as the best airport among
the 54 airports in the country rated by the Airports Authority of India
(AAI).
- Chhattisgarh's
Raipur airport was placed second.
- The
third position was shared by Mangaluru (Karnataka) and Udaipur (Rajasthan)
airports.
- As many
as 32 students have been selected out of the total 55,089
entries for the 'Dr APJ Abdul Kalam IGNITE' award, given every year
on October 15 on the occasion of Kalam's birth anniversary.
- The
awards are given by National Innovation Foundation (NIF) for
original technological ideas and innovations to children up to class 12th.
- Actress Sonam
Kapoor has been honoured with the Trendsetter Award 2016 by
ET Panache, a supplement of The Economic Times.
- This
award recognises the efforts of entrepreneurs, innovators, newsmakers and
athletes whose stories "inspire millions and whose services transform
lives".
- India and Russia have
agreed to explore building the world's most expensive pipeline costing
about $25 billion (around ₹1.66 lakh crore) to transport
natural gas from Siberia to India.
- The
4,500 km to 6,000 km pipeline will connect Russian gas grid to India, the
world's third-biggest energy consuming nation.
- ONGC,
GAIL will be roped in for the study.
- BCCI
President Anurag Thakur officially became a part of ICC's
Finance and Commercial Affairs committee, at the Board's meeting in Cape
Town On Oct 16, 2016.
- BCCI
had earlier expressed reservations about not having a representative in the
committee, which approves all revenue-related decisions.
- Thakur
was made Chairman of ICC's Development Committee, after which he became a part
of the F&CA panel.
- India's
ODI against New Zealand at Dharamshala On Oct 16, 2016 is the team's 900th,
making it the world's first side to achieve the milestone.
- Out of
the 899 ODIs, India has won 454, lost 399, tied seven, while 39 have been
abandoned.
- Note :
Australia, which has played 888 ODIs, is next on the list of most ODIs, while
Pakistan is third with 866.
- Indian
shuttler Sourabh Varma won the Chinese Taipei Masters
Grand Prix title after his opponent Malaysia's Daren Liew retired hurt in
the final in Taipei City On Oct 16, 2016.
- This is
Sourabh's fifth international title overall and his first Grand Prix win.
- Amit
Mishra has become the fastest Indian spinner to claim 50 ODI
wickets, picking up three in the first ODI against NZ at Dharamshala On Oct
16, 2016.
- Former
pacer Ajit Agarkar is the quickest Indian bowler to take 50 ODI wickets.
- Brazil has won
the inaugural BRICS U-17 Football Tournament 2016 held at Goa
on the occasion of the 8th BRICS hosted in India.
- In the
final match, Brazil defeated South Africa by 5-1 goals.
