(4th October) is World Animal Day.
a. This is an
international day of action for animal rights and welfare celebrated annually
on 4th October, the feast day of Franis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals.

Bangladesh today abolished a controversial quota system for civil
service jobs that had been the target of major street protests that
paralysed parts of the country earlier this year.
a. The cabinet
announced the end of the decades-long policy that reserved more than half of
all government jobs for the offspring of veterans from Bangladesh’s war of
independence and disadvantaged ethnic minorities.
b. Now the
recruitment for the most sought-after jobs would be determined by examination
only.

China has launched a game show to teach young people
about President Xi Jinping.
4.
The Civil Aviation Minister Suresh Prabhu today
announced that passengers can soon use facial recognition
biometrics to enter airports under the government's DigiYatra
initiative, which will become operational by February 2019.

Haryana government today notified that all bureaucrats in the
state will be charged ₹1000 for non-official journeys up to 1,000
km every month and the amount will be deducted from their salaries.
a. Earlier, the
bureaucrats used to pay ₹400 per month and 400
km was the total limit.
b. Note : All
ministers have been exempted from the hike.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated 1st Assembly of
International Solar Alliance (ISA) in New Delhi.
a. The same
event also marked inauguration of 2nd Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA)
Renewable Energy Ministerial Meeting and second Global RE-Invest (Renewable
Energy Investors’ Meet and Expo).
b. United
Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres was present on the occasion.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has successfully
undertaken series of flight trials of Astra Beyond Visual Range
Air-to-Air Missile (BVR-AAM) from September 26 to October 3,
2018.
a. The tests
were conducted at Integrated Test Range (ITR), Balasore, Odisha as part of
final development trials of the missile.

ICICI Bank's CEO Chanda Kochhar quit as the bank's Chief
Executive Officer with immediate effect after her resignation requesting an
early retirement was accepted by the board.
b. for five
years. Kochhar will also relinquish office from the Board of Directors of the
Bank’s subsidiaries.

Nearly nine months after the Supreme Court collegium recommended
his name, Justice Surya Kant was today appointed as
the Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court.
a. He was the
Advocate General of Haryana till his elevation as a permanent judge to the
Haryana and Punjab High Court in January, 2004.
10. India and Asian
Development Bank (ADB) signed a US $150 million loan
agreement for establishing India’s first Global Skills Park
park in Bhopal.
a. This skills
park will have training facilities focusing on skills for manufacturing,
service and advanced agricultural jobs, benefitting about 20,000 trainees and
trainers.
11. India also
signed $240 million loan agreement with ADB for West Bengal Drinking
Water Sector Improvement Project to provide safe drinking water to
people in three districts of West Bengal.
a. The project
aims at providing safe and sustainable drinking water to people in Bankura,
North 24 Parganas and Purba Medinipur affected by arsenic, fluoride and
salinity.
12. The Small
Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) has launched a national
level entrepreneurship awareness campaign titled Udyam Abhilasha.
a. It would
create and strengthen cadre of more than 800 trainers to provide
entrepreneurship training to the aspiring youths, encouraging them to enter the
admired segment of entrepreneurs.
13. Reliance
Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani has topped Forbes
India's 100 Richest People list for the 11th straight year with a net
worth of $47.3 billion.
a. He is the
biggest gainer on the list this year, adding $9.3 billion to his net worth amid
Reliance Jio's success.

14. Indian
cricketer and former India national under-19 cricket team captain Prithvi
Shaw has become the youngest Indian to score a century
on Test debut, achieving the feat aged 18 years and 329 days against
Windies in Rajkot today.
a. Shaw broke
the 59-year-old record set by AA Baig (20 years and 126
days).
b. Note : Shaw is
only the second Indian after Sachin Tendulkar to score a Test ton before
turning 19.
