1.
(5th October) is World
Teachers' Day.
a. UNESCO
proclaimed 5 October to be World Teachers’ Day in the year 1994, celebrating
the great step made for teachers on 5 October 1966, when a special
intergovernmental conference convened by UNESCO in Paris adopted the UNESCO/ILO
Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, in cooperation with
the ILO.
b. Theme of the
year 2018 : “The right to education means the right to a qualified
teacher”
c. Note : National
Teachers Day in India is observed on 5th September.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is on a 2 day
visit to India.
a. The visit is
to focus on the two countries signing a $5-billion deal for India to procure
Russia's most advanced S-400 long-range surface-to-air missile defence
system.
b. Putin and PM
Narendra Modi will also discuss key global issues.
3.
A South Korean court today sentenced former
President Lee Myung-bak to 15 years in prison
for corruption.
a. He was found
guilty of embezzlement, abuse of power and receiving illegal funds from Samsung
Electronics in return for presidential pardon of its Chairman Lee Kun-hee.
4.
21 countries in Indian Ocean Rim Association
(IORA) adopted Delhi Declaration on Renewable Energy in
Indian Ocean Region.
a. It was
adopted at 2nd IORA Renewable Energy Ministerial Meeting held at 2nd Global
Re-Invest India-ISA Partnership Renewable Energy Investor’s Meet & Expo in
Greater Noida.

The maiden joint exercise of Coast Guards of India and Vietnam “Sahyog
HOP TAC -2018” was held in the Bay of Bengal off the Chennai coast, Tamil
Nadu.
a. Aim of Sahyog
HOP TAC -2018 : Strengthening the working level relationship
between coast guards of both navies.
6.
India has launched massive humanitarian operation Samudra
Maitri to provide assistance to earthquake and tsunami victims
in Indonesia.
a. Under this
operation, India has dispatched two aircrafts (C-130J, C-17) and
three naval ships (INS Tir, INS Sujatha, INS Shardul) carrying
relief material and personnel to the country.

The Bihar government today prohibited all principal
secretaries and police officials from carrying cell
phones to "high-level" meetings.
a. An order
issued by the government stated, "It is found that officials from time
to time are busy on their mobile phones, which creates hindrance in smooth
conduct of the meetings."
8.
India has signed an over $5-billion deal to buy Russia's S-400
aerial-defense system.
a. India earlier
approved the deal to buy five units despite the US imposing sanctions against
the country after Russia invaded Crimea in 2014.
b. Note : The US had
warned India that buying Russian military equipment came under "focus
area" for sanctions.

The 6 member Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the Reserve
Bank of India (RBI) in its 4th bi-monthly policy statement today
kept the Repo rate unchanged at 6.50% after hiking it
by 25 bps two times in a row.
10. The Indian
rupee breached 74 per dollar for
the first time today after the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) kept the repo rate
unchanged at 6.50%.
11. The 2nd
Global Renewable Energy Investment Meeting and Expo for the year 2018
(REINVEST- 2018) was concluded today at Noida.
a. This meeting
was organised by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy from 3rd to 5th
October 2018.

A team of scientists has developed a new font titled "Sans
Forgetica"
a. It is the
first font that can help boost memory.
b. This font has
been designed using principles of cognitive psychology and design to help
people retain more information.
13. The 4th
India International Science Festival 2018 (IISF 2018) started
today at Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh).
a. This festival
is being organized by Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Earth
Sciences in association with Vijnana Bharati at Indira Gandhi Pratishthan,
Lucknow.
b. This is for
first time ISSF being organized in Uttar Pradesh.
c. Theme of IISF
2018 : “Science for Transformation“.

R N Ravi, the Chairman of the Joint Intelligence Committee, has been
redesignated as the Deputy National Security Advisor.
a. Ravi, a
1976-batch Indian Police Service officer of the Kerala cadre, is also the
government's interlocutor for the ongoing talks with Naga insurgent group
National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN-IM).

American scientist Leon Lederman (96),
who won the 1988 Nobel Prize in Physics died today.
a. Leon Lederman
coined the phrase "God particle", a shorthand
description of the then-theoretical Higgs boson, in his 1993 book of the same
name.
b. He later
auctioned his Nobel medal for $765,000 to pay medical bills.
16.
The Nobel Peace Prize for the year 2018 has
been jointly awarded to Denis Mukwege (Congolese
gynecologist) and Nadia Murad (German-based
Yazidis-Iraqi human rights activist) for their efforts to end the
use of sexual violence as a weapon of warfare.
17. Prime Minister
Narendra Modi conferred Swachh Survekshan Grameen Awards 2018to top
ranked states and districts.
a. Haryana was ranked as
Best State.
b. Satara District of
Maharashtra was ranked as Best district.
c. Uttar
Pradesh was awarded for maximum citizens’ participation.
