  • Thailand On November 23, 2016 halved its visa on arrival fees, to 1000 baht (around ₹1900), for tourists from India and 18 other countries. 
    • The move, intended to boost tourist arrivals, comes less than two months after Thailand increased its visa fees to 2000 baht. 
    • Thailand also extended its long-stay visa, for foreigners aged above 50, from one to ten years.
  • Boudhanath Stupa, a UNESCO heritage site in Kathmandu that was severely damaged in the 2015 Nepal earthquake, reopened to the public On November 23, 2016 after its reconstruction was completed.

  • India On November 22, 2016 became an Associate Member of the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN), the world's largest nuclear and particle physics laboratory. 
    • CERN's Director General said that India's membership will open opportunities for Indian industries to participate directly in CERN projects. 
    • Note : As a member nation, CERN requires India to make an annual contribution of approx ₹77 crore.
  • India was placed at the 20th rank among the 58 countries on the 2017 Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI)
    • The index was released by Germanwatch, an independent German NGO and Climate Action Network Europe.

  • Thai and Malaysian leaders have On September 11, 2016 announced that they are considering building a border wall to combat transnational crime and smuggling. 
    • The two countries already signed a security cooperation deal to step up intelligence sharing against cross-border terrorism.
    • This comes after bombings in Thai tourist towns in August allegedly by Muslim separatists, according to police.
  • The two-day International Buddhist Conclave is going to be held during 3rd and 4th October 2016 at Sarnath, Uttar Pradesh.

  • The United Nations Charter has been translated into Sanskrit for the first time since coming into force in 1945. 
    • The translation work was promoted by the National Mission for Manuscripts in India and authored by Dr Jitendra Kumar Tripathi.
  • The Electric Daisy Carnival, one of the biggest electronic music festivals in the world, will be held in India for the first time this November. 
    • Slated to be held on November 12 and 13 in Delhi, it will feature performances by Indian and international DJs. 
    • Note : It has previously been held in various US cities, Japan, Brazil and the UK.

  • The 2016 Group of Twenty (G20) Summit was held in Hangzhou, China from 4th to 5th September 2016 .
    • It was the 11th meeting of the G20. 
    • It was the first ever G20 summit to be hosted in China and the second Asian country after 2010 G20 Seoul summit was hosted in South Korea. 
    • Aim : To discuss efforts to reform global economic governance. 
    • Theme of the year : “Toward an Innovative, Invigorated, Interconnected and Inclusive World Economy”.  
    • During this Summit, the leaders, including those from India, China, and the US, have pledged to roll back protectionist measures on trade and investment by 2018-end and ensure a transparent multilateral trading system.

    • Urjit Patel today assumed charge as the 24th Governor of the Reserve Bank of India.
    • He succeeds Raghuram Rajan, whose 3-year term came to end on September 4.
  • India Post releases commemorative postage stamp on Saint Teresa
    • The Postal Department has released a commemorative stamp to honour the Mother Teresa’s canonization in Mumbai. 
    • Teresa, who worked for the destitute in Kolkata and became a global icon of Christian charity, was declared a saint by Pope Francis at the Vatican.

  • India, Vietnam Sign 12 Agreements to Boost Bilateral ties
    • India and Vietnam have signed 12 agreements for cooperation in areas, including defence and IT, to boost bilateral ties. 
    • PM Modi said New Delhi will provide $500 million credit line for Vietnam for defence cooperation. India also offered a grant of $5 million to set up a software park in Vietnam. 
    • This is the first bilateral prime ministerial visit from India to Vietnam in 15 years.

    • Biocon chairperson and managing director (M) Kiran Mazumdar Shaw has been appointed 'Chevalier de l'Ordre National de la Legion d'Honneur' (Knight of the National Order of the French Legion of Honour) for her outstanding contribution and dedication to Biosciences and Research field globally.
    • The award will be conferred on behalf of the President of the French Republic at a special ceremony later this year.
  • Deep Kumar Upadhyay re-appointed as Nepal's envoy to India
    • Deep Kumar Upadhyay was re-appointed as Nepal's ambassador to India.
