  • Goa celebrated its 29th Statehood Day On May 30, 2016.
    • It was on this day in 1987 that Goa became the 25th state of India.
    • It was a Union Territory along with Daman and Diu from December 1961 onwards when Goa was liberated from the colonial rule.
  • On May 30, 2016 Hindi Journalism Day was observed.
    • On this day in the year 1826, the first Hindi newspaper of India called Udant Martand (The Rising Sun) was edited and published.

  • The Ministry of Urban Development announced 13 new cities to be developed under the government’s Smart-Cities project.
    • These cities were shortlisted based on scores obtained in Fast Track competition conducted for 23 cities from as many States and Union Territories. 
    • The cities include Lucknow, New Town in Kolkata, Bhagalpur, Dharamsala, Chandigarh, Faridabad, Raipur, Ranchi, Warangal, Agartala, Imphal, Port Blair andPanaji
    • Further, the cities have proposed projects involving a total investment of ₹30,229 crore.
  • After 17 years of construction work,Switzerland is going to open world's longest and deepest train tunnel.

    • The central government has imposed a complete ban on Indian citizens travelling to Libya"irrespective of the purpose" in view of the security situation in the North African country.  
  • IndiaThailand andMyanmar are currently working on a 1,400-kilometres long highway that will link India with Southeast Asia by land for the first time in decades. 
    • The planned highway will start from Moreh in Manipur to Myanmar's Tamu.

    • This will be the first visit to Hiroshima by a serving US President

  • 9 Nepalese Sherpas on 11th May conquered Mount Everest, becoming the first climbers to scale the mountain in two years after a series of deadly disasters.
    • This was the first successful expedition to Everest since the deadly avalanche in 2014 that killed 16 Sherpa mountain guides.

    • The Bill amends the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957. 
    • The amendment Bill was first passed in the Lok Sabha in March 2016 and later in the Rajya Sabha in May 2016.
