  • India's first ever all-woman peacekeeping unit, which has been in war-torn Liberia since 2007, is set to depart the country on February 14. 
    • The list of 20 smart cities out of the 98 shortlisted for the 'Smart Cities Mission' was released on January 28, 2016.
    • These 20 cities will be the first to receive funds, thus kickstarting the process of developing them into 'smart cities'.
    • The next two years will see the inclusion of 40 and 38 cities, respectively.

    • To commemorate this, January 26 is celebrated as Republic Day every year. 
    • Note : This day was also chosen as the Republic Day because, on January 26, 1930, the declaration of complete independence was proclaimed by the Congress.

  1. French President François Hollande arrives in Chandigarh for a 3-day India visit.
    1. Hollande promised to assist India in the development of three smart cities -Chandigarh, Puducherryand Nagpur during the India-France Business summit in the presence of PM Narendra Modi. 
    2. He had already declared $2.25-billion line of credit for the "Smart Cities" project of PM Modi.
  2. An earthquake of magnitude 7.3 on the Richter Scale struck southern Alaska early on January 24, 2016. 
    1. The earthquake is said to have occurred at a depth of 124.8 km, and tremors were felt over 280 km away in Anchorage city.  
  3. Aiming to put an end to the protests by the Madhesi community, Nepalon January 24, 2016, passed the first amendment to its maiden democratic constitution.

  1. Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd (R-Jio), the telecom venture of Mukesh Ambani, has signed agreements with his brother Anil Ambani’s Reliance Communications Ltd (R-Com) to trade and share spectrum.
    • The two companies have announced that they had signed agreements “for change in spectrum allotment in 800 MHz band across 9 circles from RCom (R-Com) to RJIL (R-Jio), and for sharing of spectrum in 800 MHz band across 17 circles.”
  2. French President Francois Hollande on January 18, 2016 declared "a state of economic and social emergency", as he unveiled a $2.2 billion plan to revive hiring in France and redefine the country's business model. 
  3. With a total number of 2,33,635 passengers traveling through its station everyday, the Dombivli station has now become the most crowded cum fare generating station in the Mumbai suburban Railway network.

  1. As per the new Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015 which came into effect on January 16, 2016,Selling cigarette or chewable tobacco to those under the age of 18 will result in a maximum jail term of up to seven years and also carry a  fine of a Rs 1 lakh.
    • This the first time that selling of cigarette or chewable tobacco have been made a criminal offence under the juvenile law.
    • Note : According to the previous statute only selling liquor and narcotics to those under the age of 18 was a crime.
  2. China-backed Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) in which India and 56 countries have joined as founding members was opened at Beijing on January 16, 2016 by President Xi Jinping.

o    Following this, President Maithripala Sirisena addressed the Parliament and called upon all parties to unite to create the 3rd Republican Constitution for the country.
