South Korean
President Moon Jae-in is on
his first state visit to India.
a. During
this 4 day visit, he will hold talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on key
issues such as the situation on the Korean peninsula, and ways to boost trade
and defence cooperation.

India's latest frontline warship INS
Trikand has reached Sri Lanka in a goodwill
visit.
a.
The Sri Lanka Navy ceremonially welcomed the state-of-the-art
warship in accordance with naval traditions.
b. INS
Trikand is a state-of-the-art warship of the Indian Navy
equipped with a versatile range of weapons and sensors capable of addressing
threats in all three dimensions - Air, Surface and Sub-surface.
3. The
Supreme Court today upheld the death penalty for the convicts of the 2012
Nirbhaya gangrape case, after hearing a review petition seeking reduction
of sentence.
a.
Note : The death penalty was
awarded to four of the six convicts, while the fifth, a juvenile, was sent to a
correction home and the sixth had committed suicide inside the Tihar Central
Jail.
4. The
Union Environment Ministry has set Noise Standards for Airports across
the country, excluding defence aircraft, and those that are landing and taking
off.
a. According
to rules, a civil airport with more than 50,000 aircraft movements per year
should not exceed noise levels beyond 75 dB(A) Leq (decibels) during the
daytime and 65 dBA during the night,.
5. The
two-day International Round Table Conference on “Data for New India” was
started today at New Delhi.
a.
This conference is being organized by the Ministry of
Statistics & Programme Implementation (MoSPI).
b. Objective
of this conference : To identify innovative ideas for improving
the statistical system in India, taking cue from the best practices followed in
advanced countries like Canada, UK and Australia.
6. Ministry
of Railways approves Digital Aadhaar and Driving
License from Digital Locker as proof of identity of
passengers for undertaking journey by Train.
a.
Digi Locker is a secure cloud based platform for storage,
sharing and verification of documents & certificates launched by Ministry
of Electronics and Information Technology.
7. The
government has proposed to create a special group to keep a
check on e-commerce platforms like Flipkart and Amazon
India so that the foreign investment policy is not violated.
a. This
special group will comprise officials from industry department and Enforcement
Directorate.
8. Dr. Tapan Kumar Chand, CMD, NALCO, was honored
with the Knowledge Excellence Award 2018 for Outstanding
Contribution in Aluminium Knowledge domain at the 22nd International Conference
on Non-Ferrous Minerals and Metals 2018 at Ranchi.
9. Actor Kavi
Kumar Azad, best known for his role of Dr Hansraj Hathi in
'Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah', has passed away after suffering from a heart
attack.
10. Former
Information and Broadcasting secretary Uday Kumar Varma has
been appointed as a member of the Broadcasting Content Complaints
Council(BCCC), a self-regulatory body for general entertainment
channels.
a. He has
replaced former information commissioner Wajahat Habibullah, whose
tenure at the BCCC has ended.
11. Arjuna-awardee gymnast Dipa Karmakar, who
finished fourth at Rio Olympics, clinched the Gold medal in
the vault event of Artistic Gymnastics World Challenge Cup today.
12. The Punjab government has announced that it
is going to provide ₹5 lakh to every village that
turns free of drugs to purchase sports and gym equipment for
the youth.
13. India defeated England in the
third T20I to win the three-match series 2-1 and register their sixth
successive T20I series victory.
a. This
match witnessed MS Dhoni become the first-ever wicketkeeper to take 5 catches
in a T20I.
14. Team
India opener Rohit Sharma has become the first
Indian cricketer to smash three centuries in T20I cricket.
a.
Note : Rohit is only the
second cricketer after Colin Munro (New Zealand) to
register three tons in T20I cricket.
