Maldives opposition candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has won
the Presidential elections after having received 134,616 votes
as compared to 96,132 votes received by incumbent President Abdulla Yameen
Abdul Gayoom.
2.
The Wild Tiger population of Nepal has
reached 235, nearly doubling the baseline of around 121
tigers in 2009.
a. The last
survey in 2013 had estimated the tiger population at 198.
b. If these
trends continue, Nepal could become the 1st country to double its tiger
population, since the launch of the TX2 goal to double the world's wild
tiger population by 2022.

The 5th meeting of Boundary Working Group (BWG) between India and Nepal held
in Kathmandu.
a. During this
meet, both countries have agreed to explore possibility of using high
resolution satellite images in boundary survey work.

To mark the second anniversary of Surgical Strike carried
out by the Indian Army, India is going to celebrate a three-day event titled 'Parakram
Parva (पराक्रमपर्व)' from 28th
to 30th September 2018.
a. Prime
Minister Narendra Modi is expected to attend the celebrations at India Gate.
b. Note : Surgical
Strike is an operation carried out by the Special Forces of
Indian Army on September 28-29, 2016 wherein they destroyed terror launchpads
across the Line of Control (LoC) inflicting maximum damage to terrorists and
Pakistani forces backing them.

Prime Ministyer Narendra Modi today inaugurated Pakyong
Airport near Gangtok in Sikkim.
a. This is India's 100th airport and
the state's first airport situated at an altitude of
4,500 feet above sea level. S

Modi also inaugurated a new airport in Jharsuguda.
a. It is first
airport in Odisha to provide necessary connectivity to Bhubaneswar, Raipur and
Ranchi under Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS)-UDAN (UdeDesh
Ka AamNaagrik) Scheme.
b. Other than
Jharsuguda, three more airports are being developed in Odisha namely, Jeypore
(Koraput District), Rourkela (Sundargarh District) and Utkela (Kalahandi
District) to provide connectivity to remote and far flung areas of coastal
state under Regional Connectivity Scheme.
c. Important
Note : Jharsuguda is also known as the powerhouse of
Odisha.

President Ram Nath Kovind has inaugurated Centenary
celebrations of Dakshina Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha (DBHPS) in
New Delhi.
a. DBHPS is an
autonomous body functioning under the grant from Union Government, which aims
to improve Hindi literacy among non-Hindi speaking people of South India.

The BRICS' New Development Bank has approved a $525-million
loan for infrastructure projects in India.
a. The loan aims
to improve connectivity of the rural interior with the national and state
highways.
b. The loan will
be used by the Indian government for on-lending to the Madhya Pradesh government
for rehabilitating major district roads with a total length of about 2,000
km.

Indian e-commerce payment system and digital wallet
company Paytm has started testing the facial
recognition feature that can unlock its payments app on a user's
smartphone.
a. The platform
is going to introduce the technology for wallet payments, which do not require
the second-factor authentication.
10. The Reserve
Bank of India (RBI) has shortlisted 5 IT firms for implementation
of Centralised Information and Management System (CIMS) for
seamless data collection and validations.
a. These five IT
firms are :
i) Infosys,
ii) Tata
Consultancy Services (TCS),
iii) Capgemini
Technology Services India,
iv) IBM India,
v) Larsen &
Toubro Infotech.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched commencement of work
for India’s first Coal-gasification based fertilizer plant with
pet coke blending at Talcher (Odisha).
a. The coal
gasification based fertilizer plant is being developed by Talcher
Fertilizers Limited (TFL), a joint venture company of GAIL (India)
Limited (GAIL-29.67% stake), Coal India Limited (CIL-29.67% stake), Rashtriya
Chemicals & Fertilizers Limited (RCFL-29.67% stake) and Fertilizer
Corporation of India Limited (FCIL-10.99% stake).

Indian state-owned telecommunications company Bharat
Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has signed a deal with Japan's SoftBank and NTT
Communications to launch 5G internet service and Internet of
Things technology in India.

War, Al Matthews(75) passed away.
a. He is best
known for playing Gunnery Sergeant Apone in Aliens (1986).

The world's first self-driving tram, fitted with
multiple radar, LiDAR, and camera sensors, has successfully been tested
in Potsdam, Germany.
a. The tram,
which relies on AI algorithms, can react to trackside signals and respond to
hazards like crossing pedestrians and vehicles.
16.
Ex-Team India captain M S Dhoni has
become India's second-most capped cricketer, achieving the feat
against Pakistan in the Asia Cup today.
a. Dhoni, who is
currently playing in his 505th international match for India, overtook Rahul
Dravid, who represented India in 504 matches.
b. Dhoni is now
only behind Sachin Tendulkar, who played a record 664 matches for
India.
