The Chinese Lunar New Year is being celebrated
around the world with lanterns, performances, decorations and food.
a. People are
bidding farewell to the Year of the Dog in the 12-year Chinese astrological
cycle and welcoming the Year of the Pig with
hopes of happiness and good fortune.

Monaco's Prince Albert II, is on a
week long visit to India.
a. He is
accompanied by a high-level delegation.
b. Aim of this
Visit : To strengthen bilateral ties, specially in sectors such as
trade and energy.
c. He called on
External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and discussed opportunities for
cooperation in areas of environment, specially renewable energy, investment
into India, smart cities, marine ecosystems, tourism and people-to-people
contacts.
d. Later he met
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and exchanged views on enhancing cooperation,
especially in environment and climate change and renewable energy.

The Election Commission today announced that the Visually
impaired and blind voters to get Braille Voter Slips in
the Lok Sabha polls due later this year.
a. This move is
a part of Election Commision's 'Accessible Elections' Strategy.
b. The Election
Commission also plans to provide braille election photo identity
cards to visually challenged voters.
c. Important
Points to Note :
i) Braille
enabled slips were used in recently held assembly elections.
ii) Electronic
voting machines already have the braille feature.

The Uttar Pradesh state government has invoked
the Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) banning strikes
in all departments and corporations under it for a period of six
months.
a. The order came
after negotiations between government and state employees association failed on
the issue of old pension scheme.
b. The employees
association comprising teachers, officers and employees of state government has
threatened to go on strike from tomorrow.
c. Employees are
demanding old pension schemes instead of new pension schemes.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has imposed a
penalty of Rs 25 lakh on the Uttar Pradesh government
for its failure to stop discharge of dirty water into Upper
Ganga canal.
a. The green
panel said that clean environment is a fundamental right and the apathy by the
authorities has to be dealt with coercive action.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu and Chief
Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi jointly inaugurated
the Interim High Court complex of the state in Nelapadu
(Vijayawada).
a. The two
storied complex houses 16 court halls.
b. The interim
court was set up as actual High Court is being built in proposed Justice City
in Andhra Pradesh’s capital Amaravathi.

The Punjab government approved a rural
development scheme worth Rs 384.40 crore to supplement the
ongoing works to build village infrastructure and provide essential
amenities.
a. Named ‘Smart
Village Campaign’, the scheme would be financed with funds from the 14th
Financial Commission and MGNREGA works.

UK Home Secretary Sajid Javid has signed an
order to extradite beleaguered liquor baron Vijay Mallya to
India.
a. Mallya has 14
days from now to appeal against the extradition order.
b. Earlier, the
Westminster Magistrates' Court had sent the case of Mallya to the Home
Secretary for a decision on his extradition.

The government today announced that the Aadhaar
number of small and marginal farmers will be optional for the 1st
instalment of ₹2,000 under the
recently launched Direct Cash Transfer Scheme.
a. Aadhaar is,
however, compulsory for subsequent transfers.
b. Note : Finance
Minister Piyush Goyal had in Interim Union Budget 2019 announced
income support of ₹6,000 per year to
farmers holding cultivable land up to 2 hectares.
10.Veteran Marathi
actor Ramesh Bhatkar (70) passed
away.
a. Bhatkar was
known for his roles in the TV series "Commander" and "Hello
Inspector" and worked for more than 30 years as an actor in mainstream
Hindi and Marathi films such as "Aai Pahije", "Kucch
To Hai" and "Bhavesh Joshi Superhero".
b. His most
recent movie was “The Accidental Prime Minister”.
11.Former mayor of San
Salvador, Nayib Bukele has claimed victory in the El
Salvador's presidential election.
a. The new
president will take office on June 1 for a five-year term.

a. Bernhardt
will replace Ryan Zinke, if the Senate approves his nomination.
13.Former Law Minister of
Nepal Nilambar Acharya has been appointed as
country’s ambassador to India.
a. The position
of the Nepalese ambassador to India was vacant for more than a year after Deep
Kumar Upadhyay resigned to join politics.
b. President Bidya
Devi Bhandari administered oath of office to Acharya at Rastrapati Bhawan at
Sheetal Niwas.
14.K. P. Singh, Senior
Indian Police Service officer, took charge as officiating Director-General
of Police, Haryana.
a. This is in
addition to his present duty as D-G Human Rights Commission.
15.The Bangladesh
Cricket Board (BCB) is going to build an International Cricket
Stadium in Dhaka's Purbachal area after the name of
the current Prime MinisterSheikh Hasina.
16.Pakistan woman
cricketer Sana Mir became only the 2ns Asian
cricketer to feature in 100 T20I matches.
a. Mir achieved
the feat when she stepped onto the field in Pakistan's third T20I against the
Windies in Karachi on Sunday.
b. Note : Earlier,
Pakistan's Shoaib Malik had become the first Asian cricketer
to feature in 100 T20I matches.
17.Qatar won its first
major soccer title by beating four-time champion Japan in the 17th
edition of the AFC Asian Cup held in United Arab Emirates(UAE). Sudan
born Almoez Ali, became the first player to score nine goals at a single Asian
Cup.
