(21st June) is World
Music Day (Fête de la Musique)
a. This day is
celebrated every year on June 21 to mark summer solstice, the longest
day of the year.
b. This was
proposed by American artist Joel Cohen in 1976.
c. This day is
celebrated in an attempt to promote peace and spread goodwill through
melodies.
d. The day is
originated in France in 1982 and is now observed in over 120 countries.
e. Aim of this
day : To encourage free and accessible concerts or events for the
public.

The Indian Navy has deployed its warships in
the Gulf of Oman and the Persian Gulf to reassure the Indian vessels operating
and transiting in the region.
a. This comes
amid heightened tensions between US and Iran over recent attacks on oil tankers
which the US blamed on Iran. On Thursday, Iran shot down a US surveillance
drone.

On the occasion of 5th International Yoga Day, Indo-Tibetan
Border Police (ITBP) personnel performed Yoga at an altitude of 18,000
feet in northern Ladakh at -20° Celsius temperature.
a. They also
performed Yoga in Rohtang Pass and at an altitude of 19,000 feet in
Sikkim.

The 1st international film festival of Bangladesh was
inaugurated at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy by the Bangladesh State Minister
for Cultural Affairs KM Khalid yesterday.
a. The week-long
festival will feature theatre and puppet shows by 8 troupes from 7
countries.
b. Rabindranath
Tagore’s dance-drama ‘Mayar Khela’ was performed as the inaugural
presentation of the festival.
c. Note : Theatre
troupes from India, Bangladesh, Russia, China, France, Vietnam and Nepal are
participating in the festival.

5th International
Yoga Day is being celebrated today with participation of
Crores of people in 192 countries.
a. This day was
declared by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on
December 11, 2014.
b. Theme of
International Yoga Day 2019 : "Yoga for Heart"
c. On the
occasion of this day, mass yoga demonstration programmes were held at various
places in the national capital.
d. Prime
Minister Narendra Modi led around
30,000 people in Ranchi (Jharkhand) to mark the
celebrations.
e. President Ram
Nath Kovind participated in the Yoga day event organised at the Rashtrapati
Bhavan.
f. Vice
President M Venkaiah Naidu participated
in the Yoga Day celebrations organised by Brahma Kumaris at Red Fort.
g. Speaker of
Lok Sabha Om Birla practised Yoga along with MPs in the Parliament House complex. T
h. External
Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar participated
in the International Day of Yoga event with the diplomatic corps and his
Ministry officials at the Pravasi Bharatiya Kendra in New Delhi.

IT and Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad and Minister
of Railways Piyush Goyalattended Yoga Day Celebrations at
Lodhi Gardens.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis today announced
that the state government is going to amend laws to introduce strict provisions
for teaching the Marathi language as a compulsory
subject in all schools across Maharashtra.

A fresh bill to ban the practice of instant Triple
talaq was introduced in the Lok Sabha today.
a. The Bill
proposes to make the practice of instant triple talaq (talaq-e-biddat) a penal
offence.
b. Under
the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Ordinance, 2019,
divorcing through instant triple talaq is illegal, void and will attract a jail
term of three years for the husband.

To help people track their stolen mobile phones, the Telecom
Ministry is going to roll out a Central Equipment Identity Register,
a database of International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI).
a. Note : IMEI is a
15-digit number that uniquely identifies each mobile device.

The 20th Meeting of the Financial Stability and
Development Council (FSDC) was recently held under the Chairmanship of
the Union Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs, Nirmala
Sitharaman.
a. During this
meet, Sitharaman reviewed the state of the economy and discussed various
budget-related suggestions and proposals at a meeting with financial sector
regulators.
b. The Meeting
reviewed the current global and domestic economic situation and financial
stability issues including, inter-alia, those concerning Banking and NBFCs.
c. Note : Sitharaman
will present the 1st budget of Modi 2.0 government on July 5 against the
backdrop of India's economy hitting a five-year low growth of 6.8 per cent in
2018-19.
10. The
controller general of patents, designs and trademarks has granted the GI
tag to Kolhapuri chappal from Kolhapur, Sangli,
Satara and Solapur districts of Maharashtra and Dharwad, Belgaum, Bagalkot and
Bijapur of Karnataka.
a. These leather
chappals are hand-crafted and tanned using vegetable dyes.
b. The art of
making them is passed down one generation to another.
c. Note : The GI tag
will offer recognition to the footwear traditionally at the national and
international markets, the originality of the product will be lost claims the
local chappal makers.

The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) today
nominated the inclusion of women's cricket in
the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
a. Beach
volleyball and Para table tennis have also been recommended for inclusion in
the Games.
b. Note : For the
sports to be confirmed, the federation will need to receive a positive response
from a minimum of 51% of the Commonwealth Games Associations (CGAs).
12. India's
all-rounder Yuvraj Singh, who recently announced his
retirement from international cricket and Indian Premier League, has been
signed up by the Toronto Nationals for the 2019 season of Global T20
Canada.
13. India today named
a 23-member squad to represent the country at the Asian
Junior Badminton Championship.
a. The
tournament will be held in Suzhou, China from 20th of next month.
b. The boys'
singles challenge will be spearheaded by Manipur's Maisnam Meiraba
Luwang.
c. The girls'
team will be spearheaded by Malvika Bansod of the
Airport Authority of India (AAI).
