1. (2nd July)
is World Sports Jounalists Day.
a. This day was
established by the International Sports Press Association (AIPS) in 1994 to
mark the 70th Anniversary of it's foundation.
2. Indo-French
Joint Air Exercise Garuda-VI began today at Mont de Marsan in
France.
a. Indian Air
Force (IAF) and Armée de l’Air (French Air Force) are participating in this
bilateral exercise.
b. The last
edition of joint exercise between IAF-FAF was held in June 2014 at Air Force
Station Jodhpur, Rajasthan.
c. This year is
the 6th edition of exercise which is taking place from 1 July to 12 July 2019.
d. Aim of this
exercise : To enhance interoperability level of French and Indian crews
in air defence and ground attack missions.
3. The United
States Senate has passed National Defense Authorization
Act (NDAA) a legislative provision that brings India at
par with America's NATO allies and countries like Israel and
South Korea for increasing defence cooperation.
4. Bangladesh
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has embarked
on a 5-day visit to China.
a. During this
visit, she will attend the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum
(WEF) known as 'Summer Davos' in Dalian and subsequently
leave for Beijing to hold bilateral talks with Chinese Premier Li
Keqiang and President Xi Jinping.
b. The Rohingya
issue will come up as a major topic during her visit.
5. Beijing's 2nd
international airport, shaped like a starfish, has been completed after
nearly 5 years of construction, with operations set to begin on September
30.
a. The new
airport will be able to handle 72 million passengers a year by 2025, and 100
million by 2040.
b. The building
was designed by Anglo-Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid,
who died in 2016.
6. Japan has
resumed commercial whaling after a period of 31 years, but
will stay within country’s exclusive economic waters.
a. Since 1988
Japan had switched to so-called research whaling.
7. Butterfly
species Tamil yeoman (Cirrochroa thais) has been
officially declared as state butterfly of Tamil Nadu.
a. Uniformly orange
in colour with a dark brown outer ring, Tamil Yeoman is among the 32
butterfly species found in the Western Ghats.

8. Rajya Sabha
passed Jammu and Kashmir Reservation (Amendment) Bill, 2019 today.
a. This bill
proposes to give quota in jobs and educational institutions to people
living near the state's International Border.
9. The President's
Rule in Jammu and Kashmir has been formally extended for another 6
months after the Rajya Sabha approved the statutory resolution with effect from
July 3.
a. Earlier on
Friday, the Lok Sabha had approved the proposal to extend proclamation of
President's Rule in the state.
10. The Centre
today announced over 35 crore LED bulbs have been distributed
in the country till 28th of last month.
a. The LED bulbs
distributed under UJALA scheme undergo a three-tier quality
control checks to ensure that only high quality LED bulbs are
distributed.

11. Assam Chief
Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today flagged
off the 1st international flight connecting Guwahati and Dhaka at
Borjahr airport in Guwahati.
12. Centre has
declared entire State of Nagaland a ‘disturbed area’
for a period of 6 more months under Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act
(AFSPA) with effect from 30 June 2019.
13. To eradicate
deadly Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) and Japanese Encephalitis (JE)
disease, the Uttar Pradesh government has launched a massive
campaign called ‘Dastak’.
a. Dastak is a
state-wide campaign against communicative diseases which will run from 1st to
31st July 2019.
b. This campaign
is part of a comprehensive Social and Behaviour Change Communication
(SBCC) strategy embraced by state government.
14. The govt has
constituted a High powered committee of Chief Ministers of
several states for the transformation of Indian Agriculture.
a. The Committee
will discuss measures for the transformation of agriculture and raising
farmers' income.
b. It will
suggest the modalities for adoption and time-bound implementation of
agriculture sector reforms.
c. Maharashtra
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will be the
convenor of the committee, while the chief ministers of Karnataka, Haryana,
Arunachal Pradesh, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh have been included
as members.
d. Union
Agriculture, Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Minister will also be a
member of the committee.
e. Besides, NITI
Aayog member Ramesh Chand has been named the Member Secretary.
15. The
Ministries of AYUSH and Electronics and Information
Technology signed a Memorandum of Understanding in New Delhi
today to collaborate on the digitization of the AYUSH sector.
a. The Ministry
aims to digitize the entire AYUSH, leading to transformation in the field of
health care delivery at all levels, along with greater research, education,
delivery of various health care programmes and better drug regulations.
16. The second
largest private sector lender ICICI Bank has cut its lending
rates by 0.10 percent which will make all the loans cheaper.
a. The move
comes weeks after it cut its deposit rates and amid calls for banks to quickly
pass on the benefits of rate cuts by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI),
which stands at a full 75 bps since February.
17. The Central
Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has conducted a special drive today in
connection with Bank fraud cases.
a. 14 cases have
been registered, involving 640 crore rupees of siphoned funds, against accused
including various companies, their promoters, directors and bank officials.
b. The agency
has carried out searches at over 50 places in 18 cities across 12 states and
Union Territories.
c. These include
Delhi, Gurgaon, Ludhiana, Chandigarh, Mumbai, Thane, Valsad, Pune, Palani,
Gaya, Bhopal, Surat and Kolar.
18. The
1st-ever India International Cooperatives Trade Fair (IICTF), will
be held in New Delhi between 11th to 13th October 2019.
a. The
initiative is a part of the Agriculture Export Policy 2018 which aims at
doubling the agriculture export and integrating Indian farmers and agriculture
products with global value chains.
b. The Trade
Fair is aimed at promoting cooperative to cooperative trade within the country
and abroad leading to enhanced rural and farm prosperity.
c. The fair
offers a huge opportunity for the industry and business houses from India and
abroad to build alliances, product sourcing and interact with the primary
producers of a wide range of products and service providers.
19. India has pledged
to contribute 5 million US Dollars in 2019 to the UN
Palestine refugee agency.
a. It also
voiced concern over the agency's financial situation and called for ensuring
sustained financial support for its work.
20. Iranian
Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has said that
the country has exceeded the 300-kilogramme limit on
its enriched Uranium Reserves set by the 2015 nuclear deal.
a. Under the
nuclear deal, Iran had agreed to limit its sensitive nuclear activities and
allow in international inspectors in return for the lifting of sanctions.
b. Iran can
stockpile no more than 300kg of low-enriched uranium.
c. It is only
permitted (until 2031) to produce low-enriched uranium, which has a 3-4 per
cent concentration of U-235, and can fuel a power plant.
21. The Rajiv
Gandhi International Airport, Hyderabad here has initiated Face
Recognition (FR) system on a trial basis for passengers for entry into
the aerodrome.
a. The trials
which are being carried out under Centre's Digi Yatra programme started
from July 1 and would continue till July 3.
22. Filmmakers Zoya
Akhtar, Anurag Kashyap and actor Anupam
Kher are among the Indians invited to be members of
the Oscars Academy.
a. They would
join 842 new members from 59 countries including Lady Gaga, Tom Holland and
Adele.
23. V K
Tyagi has assumed charge as Chief Vigilance Officer of Punjab
National Bank (PNB).
a. Prior to
joining PNB, he was director in the Department of Economic Affairs (DEA) under
the finance ministry.
24. With his
fourth six against Bangladesh in World Cup today, opener Rohit
Sharma took his tally of ODI sixes to 229, setting
the record for most sixes hit by an Indian in ODI cricket.
a. The
32-year-old overtook ex-captain MS Dhoni, who has smashed 228 sixes
in ODIs.
