11th October 2019 was observed as International Day of
the Girl Child.
a. This is an
international observance day declared by the United Nations.
b. On December
2011 the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution to declare 11th
October as the International Day of the Girl Child to recognize girls’
rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world.
c. First
International Day of the Girl Child was observed on 11th October 2012.
d. Theme of
International Day of the Girl Child 2019 : ‘Girl
Force: Unscripted and Unstoppable'.’.

(11th October) is World Obesity Day.
a. This day is
observed globally with the view of promoting practical solutions to end the
global obesity crisis.
b. Note : Child and
teenage obesity levels have risen ten-fold in the last four decades, meaning
124 million boys and girls around the globe are too fat.

Second Friday of October (11th October) is World Egg Day.
a. This day is
celebrated around the world to help raise awarness of the benefits of eggs and
their importance in human nutrition.
b. Theme of
World Egg Day 2019 : “Eat Your Egg Today And Every Day”
c. The global
campaign will focus on the crucial role that eggs play during each stage of our
lives – before birth to age 100+.

India and Japan will hold a joint military
exercise titled 'Dharma Guardian' in Mizoram from
19th of October to 2nd of November, 2019.
a. Focus : To increase
the interoperability between the two forces and enhance coordination in dealing
with various security challenges including counter-terrorism.
b. Note :
Exercise DHARMA GUARDIAN is an annual training event, which is
being conducted in India since last year. In respect of Japan, it is crucial
and significant in terms of security challenges faced by both the nations in
the backdrop of global terrorism.

Chinese President Xi Jinping is on a visit
to Mamallapuram near Chennai today.
a. Mr Xi Jinping
would be the second leader to visit Mamallapuram, after Zhou
Enlai (visited in December 1956), reviving the traditional links
between the ancient port town of India and China.
b. During this
visit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Xi
Jinping held an informal summit and agreed to work closely to further
the economic development of both the nations.
c. Ways to
enhance the bilateral trade volume, as well as trade value, were also
discussed.

India is going to extend a Line of Credit of over 60 million
US Dollars to Comoros in the field of energy and
maritime defence cooperation.
a. India will
extend a Line of Credit of over 41.6 million US Dollars for setting up of 18 MW
Power Plant in Moroni and another 20 million US Dollars for the procurement of
High-Speed Interceptor Boats.

The 1st ever India International Cooperatives Trade
Fair got underway in New Delhi today.
a. The 3 day
Fair is a major platform to promote export of products of cooperatives which
will lead to enhanced rural and farm prosperity.
b. Organisations
from 36 countries are participating in the Fair.

The 2nd edition of Coordinated Patrol (CORPAT) of
the Navies of India and Bangladesh commenced
in Northern Bay of Bengal on Thursday.
a. Guided-missile
destroyer INS Ranvijay and ingeniously built missile Corvette
INS Kuthar are participating in the exercise along with BNS Ali
Haider, and BNS Shadinota from Bangladesh.
b. The 2-day
patrol will be followed by the maiden edition of Bilateral Exercise of the navies
of two countries at Visakhapatnam between October 12-16.
c. Improtant
Points to Note :
i) The India
Bangladesh CORPAT commenced in 2018.
ii) The exercise
aims at development of mutual communication and sharing of best practices
between the two navies.
iii) India and
Bangladesh have a common territorial boundary of over 4000 km and a maritime
boundary.
iv) This exercise
will add a new dimension to the India- Bangladesh maritime relations, said the
release.

Adani Group's Gautam Adani jumped eight
places to claim the 2nd spot on the Forbes India Rich
List 2019 with a wealth of $15.7 billion.
a) Kotak
Mahindra Bank MD Uday Kotak gained $4 billion to enter
the top five for the first time with a fortune of $14.8 billion.
b) Important
Note : Ambani remains the richest Indian for the
twelfth consecutive year.
10. Commerce
Minister Piyush Goyal will attend the 9th Regional Comprehensive Economic
Partnership, RCEP Intersessional Ministerial meeting beginning
tomorrow at Bangkok in Thailand.
a. This will be
the last Ministerial meeting before the 3rd Leaders Summit to be held on 4th of
next month in Bangkok.
b. Prime
Minister Narendra Modi is expected to attend the Summit.
c. The 9th
Intersessional Ministerial Meeting comes at a crucial stage where the RCEP is
scheduled to be announced as concluded in November this year.
11. Soviet
cosmonaut Alexei Leonov (85), the man who conducted
the 1st-ever spacewalk, passed away.
a. On March 18,
1965, Leonov stepped out of his spacecraft for a spacewalk that lasted over 12
minutes.
b. He was also
selected as the first Soviet to walk on the Moon but that mission was
cancelled.
12. Padma Shri
awardee and veteran saxophone player Kadri Gopalnath (69)
passed away.
a. An A grade
artist in Akashwani, Gopalnath held concerts in different countries and
recorded a number of CDs.
b. He was
considered as a pioneer in playing Carnatic ragas on his Saxophone.
c. Apart from
Padma Shree, Gopalnath was conferred with Sangeetha Nataka Academy Award,
Karnataka Kalasri award among others.
13. To explore
the dynamic region where air meets space, the National Aeronautics and
Space Administration (NASA) launched a satellite called Icon,
Ionospheric Connection Explorer.
a. The
refrigerator-sized satellite will study the airglow formed from gases in the
ionosphere and also measure the charged environment around the
580-kilometer-high spacecraft.
14. The 2019
Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to Abiy Ahmed Ali (Ethiopian
Prime Minister).
a. He has been
awarded for his decisive initiative to resolve the border conflict with
Eritrea.
b. Last year,
the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Denis Mukwege and Nadia
Murad for their efforts to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon
of warfare.
15. Ayesha Khan, a
22-year-old woman from Uttar Pradesh, was made the UK's High
Commissioner to India for a day.
a. She had won
the 'High Commissioner for a Day' competition, held to mark the
'International Day of the Girl Child'.
16. Union Health
Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan today gave away Kayakalp Awards to
different Central Government institutions, district hospitals, community health
centres and private hospitals for their work in maintaining high standards of
sanitation and hygiene in public health facilities.
a. In the
Central Government institutions, All India Institute of Medical
Sciences, Delhi bagged a cash prize of 3 crore rupees.
b. Jawaharlal
Institute of Post-graduate Medical Education & Research, Puducherry received
a cash award of 1.5 crore rupees.
c. Post-Graduate
Institute of Medical Education & Research, Chandigarh and Safdarjung
Hospital, Delhi and AIIMS, Bhubaneswar were among others which were felicitated
for maintaining sanitation and hygiene.
17. Vice
President M. Venkaiah Naidu was conferred 'The Order
of the Green Crescent', the highest Civilian Honour of Comoros,
by Azali Assoumani, President of Comoros in Moroni.
18. Former India
head coach Anil Kumble has been appointed as Indian
Premier League franchise Kings XI Punjab's head coach for the
upcoming season.
a. He
replaced Mike Hesson.
19. Indian
boxer Mary Kom has become the 1st boxer in
history across male and female categories to win 8
World Championships medals.
a. The
36-year-old lost her semi-final bout in 51-kg flyweight category against Busenaz
Cakiroglu of Turkey to bag bronze today.
b. She has
won World Championships gold 6 times, along with a silver
medal.
20. Indian
skipper Virat Kohli has become the 1st Indian
player and second overall to smash 40 international hundreds as
captain.
a. Kohli
achieved the feat after reaching the three-figure mark off 173 deliveries
against South Africa in the second Test yesterday.
