1. India's External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj is going to meet her Pakistani counterpart Shah Mahmood Qureshi on the sidelines of the ongoing United Nations meet in New York. 
a.  India has clarified that the meeting does not imply a resumption of dialogue. 
b.  Note Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan had earlier requested the meeting in a letter to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
2. Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani is in India for a day-long visit.
a.  This visit comes ahead of next month’s parliamentary polls in the landlocked country.
b.  During this visit, he held closed door discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
c.   The two sides discussed security situation in Afghanistan and future Indian development projects.
3. Union Minister Piyush Goyal has announced that the government would celebrate 2nd  anniversary of the Surgical Strikes on September 29
a.  Goyal said the surgical strikes in 2016, wherein Indian Army troops entered the Pakistani-occupied territory to destroy terrorists' bunkers, showed the world that "we mean business".
4. Uttarakhand today passed a resolution to declare Cow the 'Rashtra Mata' (Mother of the Nation)
a.  The resolution will now be forwarded to the Centre for approval.
5. The government has hiked Interest rate on small savings schemes including Public Provident Fund (PPF), which will now fetch 8% interest rate for the October-December quarter, up from existing 7.6%. 
a.  The 5-year Senior Citizen Savings Scheme will fetch 8.7%, while Sukanya Samriddhi Account Scheme 8.5%
6. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has asked Yes Bank's Managing Director and CEO Rana Kapoor to step down after a term extension up to January 31, 2019. 
a.  Note : Kapoor, whose current term ended on August 31, was given a 3-year extension in June, subject to RBI's approval. 
7. Indian cricket team captain Virat Kohli and world champion weightlifter Mirabai Chanu will receive the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, India's highest sporting honour.
a.  With this, Kohli became the 3rd Indian cricketer to be given the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna after former captains Sachin Tendulkar and MS Dhoni
b.  Note : Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra will be honored with the Arjuna award.

9. For the first time in the history of FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) international football team rankings, 2 teams are sharing the top spot.
a.  They are France Belgium.
