(21st September) is International
Day of Peace / World Peace Day.
a. This day was
first celebrated in 1982, and is kept by many nations, political groups,
military groups, and peoples.
b. In 2013, for
the first time, the Day was dedicated by the Secretary-General of the United
Nations to peace education, the key preventive means to reduce war sustainably.
c. Note : To
inaugurate the day, the United Nations Peace Bell is rung at UN Headquarters
(in New York City). This bell is cast from coins donated by
children from all continents except Africa, and was a gift from the
United Nations Association of Japan, as "a reminder of the human cost of
war"; the inscription on its side reads, "Long live absolute world
peace".

Peace - The Universal Declaration of Human Rights at 70”

Today (21st September) is World Alzheimer’s Day.
a. Alzheimer’s
disease is the most common form of dementia, a group of disorders that impairs
mental functioning.
b. This is a day
on which Alzheimer’s organizations around the world concentrate their efforts
on raising awareness about Alzheimer’s and dementia.

According to the 2018 Global Multidimensional Poverty
Index released by United Nations, over 270 million
people in India moved out of poverty in the decade
since 2005-06.
a. The Report
stated that India's poverty rate came down to 27.5% from 54.7% during the
period.

The US State Department today imposed sanctions
against the Chinese military for buying Russian Sukhoi
Su-35 fighter jets and S-400 air defence missile systems.
a. The US also
blacklisted 33 people and entities associated with the Russian intelligence.

Bollywood actor Anushka Sharma was
facilitated with the Smita Patil Memorial Award for the year
2018, by Union Ministers Nitin Gadkari and Piyush Goyal at Priyadarshni Academy
34th Anniversary Global Awards, in Mumbai.

India's Commonwealth Games 2018 gold-winners Neeraj
Chopra and Manika Batra, along with
athletes Hima Das and Jinson Johnson,
were selected to be honoured with the Arjuna Award.
a. Cricketer Smriti
Mandhana, tennis player Rohan Bopanna, Wushu
fighter Pooja Kadian and golfer Shubhankar Sharma were
some of the other awardees to be honoured with the Arjuna Award.

European railway manufacturer Alstom has
launched world’s first hydrogen fuel cell train.
a. The French
company said that the CoradiaiLint used fuel cells that turn
hydrogen and oxygen into electricity.

The Defence Research and Development Organisation
(DRDO) successfully flight tested the indigenously developed
surface-to-surface tactical missile ‘Prahar’, from Launch
Complex-III, ITR, Balasore, Odisha.
a. Range
stations and electro-optical systems tracked the missile throughout its flight.

Vietnam's President Tran Dai Quang (61)
passed away today.
a. Before being
appointed Vietnam's President in 2016, Quang served as the Public Security
Minister.
b. He was also a
member of the Communist Party of Vietnam's Politburo, the party's top
decision-making body.
10.
The government has appointed Revathy Iyer and Raghvendra
Narayan Dubey as Members in the Northern local board of
the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
a. The center
has also nominated Iyer and Chaturvedi as
Director on the central board of the central bank.
11. Renowned
scientist Kamlesh Nilkanth Vyas has been appointed
the Secretary of the Department of Atomic Energy and Chairman of
the Atomic Energy Commission.
a. Mr Vyas, who
is at present Director of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), has been
appointed in place of Shekhar Basu.

The Oscar-winning duo of composer A R Rahman and
lyricist Gulzar is creating the Anthem
song for the upcoming Men's Hockey World Cup 2018, which
is set to be held in Odisha later this year.
13. British
racing driver Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) won the Singapore
Grand Prix 2018 at Marina Bay Street Circuit, in Singapore.
