(2nd October) is International
Day of Non-Violence, the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi.
a. In January
2004, Iranian Nobel laureate Shirin Ebadi had taken a proposal
for an International Day of Non-Violence.
b. On 15
June 2007 the United Nations General Assembly voted
to establish 2nd October as the International Day of Non-Violence.

Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina will be
visiting India during 3rd to 6th October 2019.
a. During the
visit, she will call upon the President Ram Nath Kovind and
hold bilateral discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on
October 5.
b. The two Prime
Ministers will jointly inaugurate three bilateral projects via video
link.
c. She will also
participate as Chief Guest at the India Economic Summit organized
by the World Economic Forum during 3rd & 4th October 2019.
d. A number of
agreements are also likely to be signed during the visit.
e. Note : This will
be her 1st visit to India since she came to power in
Bangladesh and Prime Minister Narendra Modi was elected for the second time.

To mark the 150 birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, Palestine has
released a commemorative postage stamp honouring his legacy
and values.

National Security Adviser Ajit Doval is on a visit
to Saudi Arabia.
a. During this
visit, he met Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and
discussed bilateral and regional issues, including Jammu and Kashmir.

The Nation pays homage to the Father of the Nation
Mahatma Gandhi on his 150th Birth anniversary today.

Nation pays homage to former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur
Shastri on his 115th Birth anniversary today.
a. Shastri
served as prime minister from June 9, 1964, until his sudden death in Tashkent,
Uzbekistan on January 11, 1966.
b. He
successfully led the nation during the 22-day war with Pakistan in 1965.
c. He gave the
slogan of 'Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan', which led to a rare display of
unity in the country during India-Pakistan war.

NITI Aayog's School Education Quality Index (SEQI) has
placed Kerala at the top of 20 large states in
terms of quality of education.
a. Kerala was
followed by Rajasthan and Karnataka for
the 2016-17 academic year.
b. Uttar
Pradesh was ranked at the last position in the report.

In a first of its kind offer from any national carrier,
the IRCTC will compensate passengers of new Lucknow-Delhi
Tejas Express in case of delay in train schedule.
a. An amount
of Rs.100 will be paid in case the delay is for more than an
hour and Rs.250 for delay of more than 2 hours.
b. This
compensation is in addition to the Rs.25-lakh free insurance that will be given
to passengers of the train.
c. Note : The
train is schedules to be flagged off on 4 October 2019.

The 11th DefExpo is scheduled to be held for
the first time in Lucknow between 5th and 8th February
2020.
a. It is an
exhibition where the Indian Defense industry showcase its capabilities and
promotes its export potential. It is a biennial exhibition.
b. Note : The last
DefExpo was held in Chennai in 2018.
10. Jammu and
Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik has given
assent to the Jammu and Kashmir National Law University Bill thereby
paving way for the establishment of a National Law University in Jammu and
Kashmir.
11. Telangana has become
one the fully electrified states in the country after
providing electricity to over 5 lakh 15 thousand households under the Soubhagya
Yojana introduced by the Centre in October 2017.
12. To ensure greater
transparency and accountability in tax administration, the Central
Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has launched a computer-generated Document
Identification Number (DIN).
a. From now
onwards, every CBDT communication will have to have a documentation identification
number.
b. The
path-breaking DIN system became operative from 1 October 2019 and will apply to
all kind of communications from Income Tax (IT) Department, whether it is
related to investigation, assessment, rectification, appeals and penalty among other
things.
13. The National
Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has launched a new
planet-hunting telescope using a giant balloon, about the size of an entire
football field.
a. The
telescope, built by US' University of Massachusetts Lowell, will help seek out
planets that resemble Earth from a height of around 38 kilometres above Earth's
surface.
14. CH SS
Mallikarjuna Rao has been appointed as the new MD & CEO of Punjab
National Bank (PNB).
a. He will be in
the post up to September 18, 2021.
b. Rao has
previously served as the MD of Allahabad Bank and Executive Director of
Syndicate Bank.
c. Note : In August,
the Indian government has announced the merger of United Bank of
India and Oriental Bank of Commerce with Punjab
National Bank.
15. Lieutenant
General Iqroop Singh Ghuman took over as General
Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C), Central Command in Lucknow.
a. He has
replaced Lieutenant General A Krishna who retired on September
30.
16. Economist Surjit
Bhalla has been appointed as the new Executive Director
(India) at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for
a period of 3 years.
a. The post was
lying vacant after the death of Subir Gokarn in July.
17. The Reserve
Bank of India (RBI) has superseded the Board of Punjab and Maharashtra
Cooperative Bank Limited, Mumbai and appointed Jai Bhagwan
Bhoria as the bank's Administrator with all
powers of the board.
18. Former Sri
Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara took charge as the President of
England's 232 years old Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC).
a. With this, he
became the 1st non-British to hold the post.
19. India's
javelin thrower Annu Rani broke her own national record
by registering a career-best 62.43m in the qualification round at the World
Athletics Championships in Qatar's Doha.
a. Rani's was
the 3rd best throw in Group A of women's javelin throw.
b. With the win,
the 27-year-old also became the 1st Indian woman to reach
javelin throw final at the Championship.
